AI & the Ethics of Unemployment

Lots of people are talking about the potential for AI-empowered robots to accomplish more and more of the work that human beings do today. We've already seen the beginnings of this with things like cashiers at grocery stores and some fast-food restaurants. One of the big ethical questions surrounding all of this (in my mind) is: What about unemployment? What happens when the only jobs that are available for people are ones that require advanced degrees to accomplish? What will happen when AI and robots are able to do all of the manual labor? This article touches on the topic, but it's outdated. While it's nice to think that, in the future, everyone will simply get a living wage... do you think that something like that could actually become a reality in the US? Maybe I'm just cynical, but I'm concerned that AI/robotics will only serve to further increase the gap between the haves and have nots.
